Mossel Bay High Performance Training camps

Mossel Bay High Performance Training camps

I want to start a training camp series that really stands out in South Africa and bring my international experience back home and share it with the next generation of up and coming surfers in South Africa.

These training camps can be tailored according to the level of surfers attending whether; they are juniors that want to make their province and compete at SA surfing Champs or open surfers wanting to make top 5 WSL Africa and qualify for the WSL Challenger series.
Juniors:
In these training camps my goal is to introduce them to the lifestyle of being a professional surfer and give them a taste of what it takes to be the best in the world!
I have noticed that with many of the junior surfers who think just surfing is enough have limited mobility and flexibility. I have also noticed that in general their coordination is also stunted to a point where it hinders their performance and their potential to improve.
The training camps that I’ve been running in Portugal at the High performance centre in Viana Do Castelo have been extremely successful and its level of excellence I want to bring home to my Mossel Bay training camps.
To kick off the day we will start with 20min mobility and flexibility routine, this will be something I encourage to bring into their daily routine especially if their only sport is is surfing.
After the days surfing we’ll do some recovery stretching to ensure that the kids are ready for the next day of surfing.
Our focus of course will be surfing where I’ll go into great detail with regards to their technique but at the same use land based techniques in the gym to help speed up these improvements.
I had the pleasure of speaking to Elsa Van Velden a Biokinetkist who has a gym less than 300m from the Point which we can use on the Saturday of the two day training camp.
Finally what I’d like to bring to the training camp is heat specific drills which I leant from the master himself Barton Lynch when attending a week long training camp in Australia. Depending on surf we can do these drills which will help with:
• Time management
• Decision making
• Surfing under pressure
• Heat structuring
• Scoring yourself
We have an amazing coastline here in the Garden Route with many different types of waves for all kinds of conditions from very small to very big swells as well as Point breaks, beach breaks and of corse reef breaks.
Each surfers must bring with himself or herself a yoga mat.
